Why Sigma Nu?

To develop ethical leaders inspired by the principles of Love, Honor and Truth.

To foster the personal growth of each man’s mind, heart and character.

To perpetuate lifelong friendships and commitment to the Fraternity.

The Mission of Sigma Nu

Sigma Nu Nationally

Anti-Hazing. Sigma Nu Fraternity was founded in 1869 as an act of defiance against the system of unbridled hazing at the Virginia Military Institute. To this day, Sigma Nu stands against hazing in any form. The fraternity and chapter give you the promise that you will never be hazed as a candidate or brother of Sigma Nu.

Connections. Nearly 300 Sigma Nu chapters and over 100 alumni chapters have been chartered. With more than 230,000 initiated members bound by a common ritual and heritage, you will benefit from a large and supportive network of alumni. You will also share a common bond with Sigma Nu Hall of Fame inductees such as Harrison Ford, Glenn Miller, Bob Barker, and Eli Manning.

Philanthropy. Sigma Nu’s Helping Hand Initiative supports these national philanthropic organizations:

  • The Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards
  • CHARACTER COUNTS!
  • Habitat-for-Humanity
  • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

Brothers around the country gain project management and other leadership skills while providing needed assistance to these organizations.

Programming. From our Sigma Nu Institutes for officer training, to our biennial Grand Chapter conventions, to the College of Chapters program for incoming chapter presidents, Sigma Nu provides opportunities for you to meet brothers from around the continent to exchange experiences and ideas. At the chapter level, our award-winning LEAD program will assist you in your growth as you progress through your education.

Locally

Friendship. Whether you join because of your friends or to make new ones, there are few organizations better that Sigma Nu at CWRU. From our social events to our philanthropic efforts, every minute spent is one getting closer to your brothers. In Sigma Nu, you will build close relationships that will last a lifetime.

Membership Development. Our chapter’s implementation of the national LEAD program has earned awards both on campus and nationally. Standing for Leadership, Ethics, Achievement, and Development, this member education program will help you grow in four phases:

  • Phase I, our new member education program, where you will be introduced to our chapter, fraternity, history, and values.
  • Phase II, for recent initiates, where you and your brothers will discuss the qualities of leadership.
  • Phase III, where you are given an opportunity to work on project management, goal-setting, and personal health.
  • Phase IV, often led by the chapter’s alumni, provides you lessons on topics such graduate school and taxes to prepare you for life beyond undergrad.

In addition, All-Chapter LEAD events are available to brothers at any phase. Past All-Chapter LEAD sessions include everything from driving manual transmission automobiles, to the LGBT Center’s famed Safe Zone Training.

Campus Involvement. The brothers of Sigma Nu at CWRU have very diverse interests, from radio programming to archery. Members in Sigma Nu have earned leaderships positions everywhere from Orientation Leaders and the Undergraduate Student Government, to the Indian Student Association and Interfraternity Congress. By joining Sigma Nu, you will benefit from the shared experience of these brothers.

Leadership Opportunities. Our chapter has over 20 elected positions, such as President, Philanthropy Chairman, and Chapter Historian. Even if you are not an officer, we have committees to handle specific tasks within the chapter including the Executive Board, the Recruitment Committee, and our internal judicial board.

No matter your position, will gain experience in project management and team building. Most importantly, you will get invaluable practice in leadership.

Scholarship. Sigma Nu’s are committed to scholarship. We assist brothers through our Scholarship Plan, which is revised by our Scholarship Chairman and approved by the chapter each semester. If you are an underclassman, being in Sigma Nu naturally places you in the presence of more upperclassmen than you would be otherwise—an easy opportunity for informal mentoring. Need more convincing? CWRU Greek Life grade reports consistently show all-fraternity GPA average was above the all-men’s average—Sigma Nu is usually one of, if not the top.

Service. 12096175285_9b59ba3a41_oWe have been actively involved in service events and projects both on and off-campus. These opportunities to serve our community include activities such as the much-loved (and incredibly fun) Lake Metroparks Haunted Hayride, Brides Against Breast Cancer, and CWRU’s Saturday of Service. We also support fellow Greek organizations by participating in their annual events, such as Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash and Sigma Psi’s Mr. CWRU.

The Cost. The costs of membership are:

  • A one-time candidate fee (Covered by Alumni if a candidate maintains a 2.75 GPA or higher during their candidate semester)
  • A one-time initiation fee (Also covered by Alumni if a candidate maintains a 2.75 GPA or higher during their candidate semester)
  • Semesterly membership dues, set by a vote of the chapter

Not only are these costs less than 2% of the total cost of college, our treasurer can also set up plans for payment.

Brothers who live in our 32-room chapter house or on the chapter’s board plan save thousands of dollars on both room and board—more than enough to make up for any payments for dues. The chapter house is considered on-campus housing during the school year; you will not lose grant money by living in the house. If you have questions about cost, contact us.

10435681_10152437963458603_7156866820782748423_nAccolades. Our strengths are recognized by our parent institutions. Since our local founding in 1907, our chapter has grown into a model Sigma Nu chapter. In 2014, our chapter earned its fourth Rock Chapter Award—an honor granted once every two years to the top Sigma Nu chapters. Delta Alpha has earned Rock Chapter Awards in 2008, 2004, and 2002, with honorable mentions in 2010, 2006, and 1998.

Our chapter has also been recognized on campus: It earned CWRU’s President’s Cup Award for Best Fraternity in 2007, 1998, and 1997. The award’s transformation into today’s Pytte Cup Chapter Development process did not stop our success: Sigma Nu became the first fraternity to earn the highest rating of Excellence in one category in 2014, and the first to earn more than one in 2015.

Our chapter’s members have also been recognized for their individual achievement: Ten Alpha Affiliates hail from Sigma Nu at Case Western Reserve. An individual-level equivalent to the Rock Chapter award, only ten Sigma Nu seniors nationwide are given this distinction annually.
